What Is An Advance Healthcare Directive?

An advance healthcare directive, such as a living will, is a legal document that sets forth a person’s end-of-life healthcare treatment desires. Generally, an advance healthcare directive does not become effective until a person is not able to make decisions for him/herself and unless the person has a terminal condition, is an irreversible coma, or is in a persistent vegetative state with no reasonable chance of recovery.

The provisions in living wills generally span a continuum from rejecting all treatment to requesting all treatment and everything in between.
